DESCRIPTION

The US Food and Drug Administration established the Sentinel Initiative with operations overseen by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. It uses a distributed database through which the FDA can run analytical programs on local databases of health providers, such as Humana, Inc. and Blue Cross Blue Shield. The model securely shares and analyzes five data types: administrative data; clinical data; registry data; inpatient data; and mother-infant linkage data. Sentinel intends to actively monitor adverse reactions of medical products after they are on the market.
